Laser teeth whitening is a procedure that is performed in a dental office under the supervision of a dentist. High concentration of hydrogen peroxide (carbamide peroxide) whitening solution is applied to your teeth. A special wavelength laser light is then placed correctly in front of your teeth in order to activate the whitening solution.
After a period of time, the gel is taken off the teeth and a fresh gel is reapplied. The laser activation is then repeated for a second and third solution application. After the third application, the whitening solution is removed and your whitening procedure is complete. The laser whitening procedure in the dental office can be completed in about an hour in a single dental office visit.
The main disadvantage to laser whitening is tooth sensitivity. Because a high concentration of whitening solution is used, patients may experience immediate increased tooth sensitivity. A mild to moderate shuddering sensation throughout the entire procedure lasting up to several days is not uncommon. Tooth sensitivity can also occur with other whitening procedures, but is less pronounced as they utilised more diluted whitening solutions.
Cost is also another factor when considering which procedure is most appropriate for you. As with anything, the faster the procedure the more costly, for teeth whitening procedures, laser whitening produces instant results, but is more expensive when compared to other whitening treatments that make take various weeks to produce comparable results. Expect to pay up to $500 for laser whitening treatment.
